Little more than a spoiled boy, Raphael Flamenco leaves New Orleans for the new Republic of Texas to drag his willful Yankee wife back to civilization. She is his “property” and she will damned well get used to her new role as a proper Creole wife. If Texas doesn’t kill a man first, it has a way of making him grow up. Raphael quickly learns that there are no artificial codes of honor in this brutal land. When men fight, they fight like animals to survive. He learns that his best friend can be a half-breed Cherokee. And this Creole son of slave owners finds out what it means to be a slave himself. The Comanche are thorough teachers. But Raphael Flamenco survives to become the tough, hardened Texian, Rafe Fleming, who never abandons his search for the woman he cannot stop loving.
Boston abolitionist Deborah Manchester falls so deeply in love with her handsome Creole husband that she tries to adjust to his world, a society steeped in moral hypocrisy and casual cruelty. But when she discovers that she carries her husband’s child, she vows that her babe will not be tainted by the same social “poison” that infects her husband. He will not change, so she must. “Gone-to-Texas” as a runaway wife posing as a widow, she learns on the raw frontier that she possesses strengths she never imagined. Yet in her lonely bed at night, she still dreams of Rafael's heated touch.
When, by chance, they come face to face in San Antonio, both are stunned by how Texas has changed them. He finds his silver-haired “Moon Flower” is now a strong Texas woman of property whose trust he must win in order to reclaim her love. In spite of the scars on his face and the look of a dangerous pistolero, Rafe Fleming is still the only man she will ever love. Now, just what does an independent “widow lady” do when her “dead” husband resurrects himself from the grave?

I really like the story as it spanned a large number of years. I didn't however care for the heroine as she was pretty much brainless for at least the first half of the book. She was always counter to common sense and so seemed to self destruct as a person. I have to say that any character, whether male or female has to have some common sense in order to make it past me. Luckily for the second half of the book she meets up with an older female character who teaches her some valuable lessons and she becomes stronger for it. Author Shirl Henke always packs a lot of "history lessons" in her books that involve the main characters in some pretty different ways, usually spys. This book covers events just prior to the battle of the Alamo, through the decisive battle of the Texas revolution, San Jacinto, and into Texas state hood.Product details

Moon Flower GonetoTexas Trilogy Book 2 edition by Shirl Henke Romance eBooks Reviews
Shirl Henke historical romances are always great and hard to put down.
Really good romance. Held my interest from beginning to end.

This is a great series, well written and researched.
The passion unbridled, the struggle for independence with the common hurdle old ways vs new.
Love the butting of heads and strength in characters.
You felt the heat of passion, the fear, struggles and overall the deception. You could understand the hate and feel the disappointment.
The descriptions are vivid, in so much as you could see the wilderness and take in the smells.
Highly recommend.
Not a very good story. I like Sherl's books, but nothing special about this one. Sorry, but I'll keep reading. Can't hit a home-run every time.
Very interesting. Kept me on my toes. The book took us from the beginning of their marriage, to life a part , then together again. We watched as Rafe grew. Saw how he never stopped loving Deborah and looking for her and their son. What he went through to build the ranch, make a life for his family. Not many women would take in their husband child by his mistress, Deborah did. She loved that child from the start. This book is a must read. You will not be disappointed.
"Moon Flower" the second in the "Gone to Texas" trilogy was as compelling as "Cactus Flower" (which was the first book)! I love the writings of author Shirl Henke! She sets the story on a grand scale and weaves history (really interesting BTW) in great big Texas style! Her characters are interesting and I cared about them all, even the ones not directly featured in the story line.
I have purchased the entire trilogy on my kindle and know that I will read them all again in the future. I have recommended them to others, and I don't do that unless I am really impressed. I read a lot of Historical Romance and this trilogy stands out to me. I am still thinking about them. Ms Henke has obviously done a lot of research so her stories are much more than "emotional tales". Her descriptive writing and dialogue are fantastic! You will not be sorry to spend either time or money on this author. I think I might have to start a fan club!!
It was intense love story but for the mistress and her spoiled child. I am sorry, if you love someone like he does Deborah, I cannot imagine him visiting his mistress so frequently.
I landed up feeling bad for the mistress because he is all she has known. She has been loyal and seems to have undergone a traumatic loss of a child. She is not evil either but someone who is trying to hold onto her only source of emotional support. Yet, the author made her out to be less than admirable . I thought this was unfair.
She also made the child seem like a spoiled brat. By the time Rafael gets her, she is old enough to understand that she is easily disposable, yet she is made to act like a rotten, ungrateful little miss.
